Invisalign Benefits and Inconveniences

An alternative to the traditional metal braces of our yesteryears, Invisalign does as its name suggests, supporting the realignment and straightening of teeth in a most discreet and attractive way. The use of Invisalign has revolutionized the cosmetic dentistry and orthodontics industries over the past four years, offering a feasible alternative to the thick, uncomfortable, and extremely visible metal braces that we have become so accustomed to over the past sixty years. It is estimated that, since the development and release of this new product line, adults who have been in need of such treatments are 90% more likely to give their teeth the attention that they deserve.

Envisaging is not covered by some insurances, as it costs substantially more than do metal braces, but the benefits are quite worthwhile for most adolescent to adult patients. Comfort being another leading factor regarding the popularity of Invisalign, this device is far more smooth and contoured against the teeth, gums, cheeks, and tongue than metal braces are. Because the device is removable, and moreover must be removed when then patient eats, drinks, or brushes their teeth, this comfort factor plays a large role in how well the product works over the estimated duration of treatment.

This is one of the disadvantages of Invisalign as seen by dentists and oral professionals. Success and timely straightening of the teeth depends solely upon the self discipline of the patient, as he or she has complete control over when the device is in use. In order to accurately and successfully align the teeth, Invisalign must be worn a minimum of 20 to 22 hours each day. This allows enough time for eating, drinking, and the cleansing of the device and the teeth only. Should patients decide that they wish to take a day or a week off of wearing their transparent braces, this can invariably offset the progress and the overall results of Invisalign therapy.

Invisalign does not allow for any activities that involve clenching, chewing, biting, or grinding of the teeth. Patients who are teeth grinders by night, therefore, should consult with their dentist or orthodontists about ways of cushioning or padding this behavior so as not to cause damage to the Invisalign device. One cannot chew gum or eat candy when wearing these braces, though the device does not allow for sticking as do traditional metal braces. Speak with your dentist thoroughly about your habits, expectations, and goals before choosing Invisalign to improve your smile.
