One River Metaphor – Tantric Mysticism

Because the FINITE cannot define the INFINITE, we do the best we can by the use of; however, even they leave us wanting. But, what are we humans to do otherwise? So, let me employ one that doesn’t get that much play and maybe therein we’ll SEE something afresh. Maybe!

Meister Eckhart is one of my favorite theologians. And a phrase that he is credited with that floors me when I stop to really think about it is, "We are heirs of the fearful creative power of God." Wow and wow!

We are responsible and we have great responsibility: more than we care to admit of come face to face with. Carl Jung put it this way, "We can no longer wiggle out on the plea of our littleness or our nothingness." Isn’t it the truth. And herein comes the metaphor. We are ALL grounded to, tied in to, and a part of that great underground river DIVINITY. There is but one river, but many wells that traverse to it.

There are Tao wells, Buddhist, Hindu, Christian, and Native American wells.

As the Sufi mystic wrote, "Sufism is not different from the Tantric Mysticism of all religions. Tantric Mysticism comes from Adam, from Jesus, and from Mohammed. A river passes through many countries and each claims it for its own. But there is only ONE RIVER." As Matthew Fox wrote, "The awakening of the mystic in our time means that many more wells are being sunk into the wet, creative, greening powers of that one underground river."

I believe that we are approaching a season, epoch, or age wherein the MYSTIC is coming forth from ALL religions, from every culture that’s not even known as "being religious". Whatever it IS that is happening, may the "one river" be in our individual and collective hearts.

Want to take a dip? :-)
