Methodologies of Online Education

July 6, 2010 - 11:06 am Comments Off

There were many myths and misconceived notions about online education until recent past. Some people believed that online learning is a good option only for students who have a good track record. It was also believed that only those students having access to computers and modern means of communication would benefit from online education. However, with time such notions are giving way to an open acceptance where people have started accepting online education as a viable alterative for conventional education.

Not all online education options have a similar methodology and approach. There are various modes of online education available and it would be better if you have an understanding of different methodologies in use by online education providers so that you can select the course with the methodology that suits you the best. Here we are discussing the learning methodologies for online education:

Online Education Methodologies- Different Options

Live: This methodology is also known as synchronous mode of learning. In this mode of online education, there is instant communication between the students and teachers and at times even among different students. Herein all the participants get access to information simultaneously. Virtual classroom using the facility of video or audio conferencing and real-time chat are some examples of this mode of online education.

This learning methodology has its advantages and disadvantages. This mode is more akin to the conventional education except for the fact that the students don’t have to travel to the classrooms. The biggest advantage of synchronous method of online education is that it allows instant feedback for the student’s performance and allows active interaction among the students and teachers. Thus the students can get the training and education that is tailored suit their needs. Moreover, live education also facilitates the setting up of learning communities and groups for a better interaction among the learners.

This method has the disadvantage that the students cannot plan their schedule and they are bound by the pre-set schedule.

Asynchronous: Asynchronous mode of online education is popularly termed as store and forward education. In this method, the communication between the student and teacher is not instant. Self-paced courses are the examples of asynchronous online education where the students communicate with the teachers and amongst themselves by exchanging emails and posting messages on online bulletin boards and discussing groups. This is the more popular mode of online education because it offers more convenience and flexibility to the students and they can decide the pace and schedule for their education and training.

Despite of the advantages, this mode of online education has its disadvantages too. The students in this mode of learning, lack discipline and motivation and generally tend to develop a lackluster attitude towards education.

The mixed mode of learning in online education combines the advantages of both the modes and it is a combination of personal lectures or face-to-face interaction learning through online activities.

Now that you have a better understanding of different methodologies of online education, you can pick up the right one for you and enhance your skills.

Difference Between On-Campus Education and Online Education

July 6, 2010 - 11:06 am Comments Off

On-campus education vs. online education! Is one better than the other? Can one completely replace the other? Indeed it seems that online education is the way of the future. Educational institutions, corporations and government organizations alike already offer various forms of electronic teaching. However, can a computer truly replace a teacher and a blackboard?

How people learn

Each individual has a form of learning that suits them best. Some individuals achieve fantastic results in courses taught online, however most people drop out of 100% computer-led courses. Educational institutions, as well as companies in carrying out staff training, must recognize that there is no ideal way to carry out the teaching of a large group of individuals, and so must design programs that best suits the needs of the group as a whole.

People learn using multiple senses. This involves learning through both theoretical components of a course, as well as social interaction with both instructors and other students. Students learn from each other’s mistakes and successes, not just from what they are told by instructors.

Each individual student has an ideal learning pace. Instructors are therefore faced with the challenge of designing courses that move forward such that those students with a slower learning pace do not get left behind, while not moving so slowly that students with faster learning paces get bored.

Online education

In the age of high-speed information transfer, online education is becoming a popular and cheap means for delivering teaching to individuals outside the classroom, and in some cases all over the world. Teaching can be via CD, websites, or through real-time online facilities such as webcasts, webinars and virtual classrooms. However, different methods of online education each have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Online education is still a relatively new concept, and in many respects still in the teething stages. As such, various problems arrive across different online education environments. For example:

1. Lack of immediate feedback in asynchronous learning environments: While some online education environments such as webcasts, webinars and virtual classrooms operate live with the addition of an instructor, most do not. Teaching that is delivered through a CD or website, although having the advantage of being self-paced, provides no immediate feedback from a live instructor.

2. More preparation required on the part of the instructor: In an online education environment, an instructor can not simply stand in front of a whiteboard and deliver a class. Lessons in online education environments must be prepared ahead of time, along with any notes and instructions that may accompany the teaching.

In many cases it would also be necessary that the instructor not only understands the concepts being taught, but the technology used to deliver that teaching. This therefore increases the skill-levels needed of online education instructors, placing greater demand on educational institutions.

Staffing levels may also be higher for courses run in an online education environment, requiring for example:

The Instructor – able to teach both course content and be skilled in the use of technologies involved

The Facilitator – to assist the instructor in delivering content, but may do so remotely

Help Desk – to offer assistance to instructors, facilitators and students in the use of both software and hardware used to deliver the course.

3. Not all people are comfortable with online education: Education is no longer only sought by the world’s youth. With an increased trend towards adult and continuing education, there is a need to design courses suitable for students over a larger age-range, as well as students from different and varied backgrounds. It is difficult, however, to design online education environments suitable for everyone.

4. Increased potential for frustration, anxiety and confusion: In an online education environment, there are a greater number of parts making up the system that can fail. Server failures may prevent online courses from operating. Software based teaching applications may require other specific components to operate. Computer viruses may infect software necessary to run online education environments. If these systems are complex, students may choose the ease of On-campus education rather than taking the additional time and effort necessary to master the use of online education systems.

5. The Digital Divide: Many people who live in remote areas and developing countries do not have access to computers, making any form of online education virtually impossible. For this reason, online education is only able to be targeted at the people lucky enough to be able to take advantage of the technology involved. Similarly, offering live teaching across the world means that different time zones and nationalities increase the demand for multi-skilled instructors.

In addition to these, there are also several legal issues associated with maintaining an online education environment. For example, intellectual property laws, particularly those relating to copyright, may or may not fully cover electronically created intellectual property. For example, information on a website is not necessarily considered to be public domain, despite being available to everyone. However, the Australian Copyright Act was amended in 2001 to ensure that copyright owners of electronic materials, including online education environments, could continue to provide their works commercially.

On-Campus Education

Still the most common form of instruction is traditional classroom-style learning. These instructor-led environments are more personal than online education environments, and also have the advantage of allowing for immediate feedback both to and from student and teachers alike. However, the classroom allows for less flexibility than courses run in online education environments.

Instructors in modern classroom environments are still able to take advantage of several forms of electronic teaching tools while still maintaining the atmosphere associated with the traditional classroom environment. For example, PowerPoint slides can be utilized instead of a whiteboard or blackboard. Handouts can be distributed via course websites prior to the event. However, on the day, students are still able to actively participate in the lesson.

Like online education environments, On-campus education comes with certain drawbacks, the most common of which is the classroom itself. This requires a group of people which, in a university for example, could reach a few hundred people in size, to gather in the same place at the same time. This requires enormous time and financial commitment on behalf of both the students and the educational institution.

However, it is this sort of environment that is most familiar to students across the world. People of all ages can access a classroom environment feeling comfortable with the way that a classroom-run course is carried out. Older students who may not be comfortable with the use of information technology are not required to navigate their way through possibly complex online education environments, making On-campus education the most accessible form of teaching.

On-campus education has one advantage that 100% electronically delivered courses can not offer – social interaction. Learning comes from observing, not only what is written on a page or presented in a slideshow, but what is observed in others. Most students are naturally curious, and so will want to ask questions of their instructors. The classroom environment allows students to clarify what is being taught not only with their instructors, but with other students.

So, Which is Better?

There is no style of instruction that will best suit every student. Studies have shown (Can online education replace On-campus education) that courses where online education is used to complement On-campus education have proved more effective than courses delivered entirely using only one method. These courses take advantage of both online education materials and a live instructor, and have produced results higher than those of students in either 100% online education or classroom environment courses. Students have the advantage of the immediate feedback and social interaction that comes with the classroom environment, as well as the convenience of self-paced online education modules that can be undertaken when it best suits the student.

It would seem that online education environments will never completely replace On-campus education. There is no “one size fits all” method of teaching. Teaching styles will continue to adapt to find the method that best fits the learning group. Using a mix of online education environments and classroom sessions, educational institutions, corporations and government organizations can ensure that training is delivered that is convenient and effective for both instructors and students alike.

Danny DeMichele – Local Online Marketing Consultant

July 5, 2010 - 7:50 am Comments Off

One of the best ways to advertise a small business is through local Internet marketing, but unfortunately many small business owners do not know the first thing about this method. A great deal of the work behind a local online marketing campaign will be similar to any other search engine optimization campaign; but instead of targeting potential customers around the nation it will target a specific geographic market. Geo-targeting takes a unique set of methods and a certain level of expertise, though. This is why online marketing consultants like Danny DeMichele DeMichele do what they do – most business owners, whether they own a large multinational corporation or a small local business, do not have the time or the knowledge to put together an online advertising campaign that works.

The first step to promoting a small business on the Internet is, of course, building the web site itself. This doesn’t need to be anything fancy, but it does need to be built in such a way that it is “search engine friendly,” meaning that the search engines can pick up the content on all the pages so they can see if it is relevant to what people are looking for. A local online marketing consultant such as Danny DeMichele DeMichele, who is based in the Southern California area but has helped people with local marketing campaigns all over the nation, can look through a site and make sure it is set up correctly. Then the work of optimizing the site for the search engines can begin.

Local Internet marketing campaigns, just like national ones, focus on specific keywords that people will likely use when they are searching for the types of goods and/or services that the client sells. But the keywords and key phrases used for a local marketing campaign will have geo-specific words included. So if the web site offers plumbing services in the Seattle area, for example, they would use keywords such as “Seattle plumbing services” and “Tacoma plumbers” rather than just “plumbing services” and “plumbers.”

There are also techniques that can be used to place ads for the web site on pages that people are viewing based on their geographic location. Local directories are very helpful as well. With the help of a good local Internet marketing consultant, any small business owner can target their local market using the power of the World Wide Web.

Buying MLM Leads Will Send You To The Poor House

July 4, 2010 - 6:58 am Comments Off

How can a network marketer grow his business without quality leads? This article will give details on the difference between buying MLM leads that usually end up worthless and creating quality laser targeted MLM leads that convert like crazy.

Not Trustworthy

Once an MLM rep works through their warm list they often turn to purchasing MLM leads to further build their business. There are advertisers all over the net claiming to offer the best leads. However there are few of these lead selling businesses that can really provide what they say they provide. No long ago the was a MLM lead source that was selling double opt-in MLM leads. Double opt-in means the email address of the lead was verified to be a real email address. After running an email ad to the leads provided by this service it was shown that over 25% of the leads were not confirmed and were actually bogus leads. If you are laying out cash for leads you deserve to get what you pay for.

Not Good Resources

Other issues with MLM leads companies is the way they obtain their leads in the first place. Many lead companies get leads from online surveys. They usually pay the person a small fee to fill out a survey and then their contact information is resold as a lead. If you are building a team of heavy hitting MLMer’s then you would want smart marketers that are willing to work hard. Now lets add to the equation a prospect that is willing to spend time to sit and fill out forms all day. Someone who is willing to sit all day and fill out surveys just to make a few dollars is not someone you want on your team. They are actually working for under minimum wage. Can you build a huge organization with people like that? These people are not highly motivated and definitely not leaders. If you plan to build your MLM with these folks I can promise you will need pain killers for all the headaches you will experience.

Cost of MLM Leads

You must also consider what you pay per lead. There are lead companies that actually sell leads at $5.00 bucks a pop. How many of these can the average person really afford? Network marketing is a numbers game and at such a high cost per lead how can one stay in business. You had better be a super closer. I have talked with several MLM reps who have wasted $1,000′s in MLM leads and had zero sign ups into their MLM company. High cost is not a good way to go.

The Answer

If you want MLM leads that are quality and targeted and fresh then there is a solution and it cost you very little cash if any. The first step in getting quality leads is to use the right kind of bait. The method all of the MLM lead selling people use to catch their leads is not the best kind of bait and doesn’t catch the best fish. If you want quality MLM leads you need to offer something that will peak the interest a serious MLM entrepreneur. Here is your Tip for the day. You need to understand who your target market is and in this industry your target market are people who are in MLM or they are thinking about joining MLM. If you want to draw these folks in you need to offer them something of value. Every MLMer want’s the same thing. They want quality leads they can depend on and they want to grow their business. If you provide this solution you are using the proper bait to catch the right fish. Here is another little tip. Once you teach someone to produce massive leads that are laser targeted and quality then you have a student who will join you in any business you pursue.

You Are In The Drivers Seat
